Program Notes

Written for Kathryn Rudnik, Dusk to Dawn (2020) showcases the warmth and the brightness that is capable from the solo flute. In the piece, the listener will hear many wonderful techniques capable on the flute allowing total expressivity of the player. These techniques include, flutter tongue, tongue pizzicato, key clicks, harmonics, and a jet whistle. When I wrote this piece, the most important goal was to allow the performer space to express their artistry (admittedly something I want in every piece). The title makes one think potentially of sitting out under some stars on a clear night, however, there are many more hues and colors that happen between dusk and dawn then just the stars. This piece shows that the flute is the perfect instrument to showcases all of those different hues.
