Program Notes

With Them for Wind Ensemble, was written in response to the shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio in early August 2019. The piece focuses on those whose lives were taken, not only in these shootings; but in the countless shootings of recent memory. The piece begins with a simple introduction leading to a militaristic section symbolizing argument and division. After this breaks down, a simple elegy begins for those we have lost. This however, is short lived before chaos and hysteria take over completely engulfing the music until it devolves into complete silence. Then as if to start over, the clarinets begin the hymn tune “Abide with Me”, as a marker of hope and remembrance of those lost who can be easily forgotten. The piece builds, erasing the division from before, and then by the third statement of the hymn tune encourages an ending where humanity is hopeful for the future. It is entitled With Them because no matter the lives lost or the people gone, they are always with us, and we are always with them.
